Day 19 and 20 was spent in the windy city also known as Chicago. It’s crazy to think that I have literally biked from Baltimore, Maryland to Chicago, Illinois. That is a LONG ways!! Thursday we rolled into Chicago around 1:30. It was another hectic time getting inside the city. When you have a group of 5 riders going through heavy traffic, makes it kind of a stressful time. We only had to do 60 miles however which made it a little easier day. A few months ago, I wouldn’t even been able to do that many miles. It’s amazing how much stronger my legs have gotten in just 20 days. So after arriving at our destination at The University of Illinois at Chicago dorms, most of us took a little snooze to distress after the ride into the city. After I got up from my nap, a group of us wanted to go to the Sears Tower. I’m afraid of heights. I’m not a fan of them. I conquered this fear by stepping out onto the glass box on the 103rd floor. It was crazy high. I took a picture of me doing this so I can remember this forever. Next step is sky diving. I really wanted to do this. Not sure why, just wanted to conquer this. Cole Harrison if you are reading this, we so need to do this! haha
Day 20 was started off by sleeping in till about 9:00 a.m. It was beautiful. After I woke up I walked down town by the pier and over by "the bean" we explored the city. We ate some deep dish pizza of course! It was pretty amazing. Later in the afternoon, we gave out our second scholarship to a young lady who had a father that passed away from cancer. We did this over by the lake by a famous fountain in Chicago. I absolutely loved Chicago. The food, places, and the skyline. I was sad to go.
Day 21 was spent journeying 67 miles to a town called De Kalb, Illinois. It was funny because the lady at the church said it is kind of a small town of 42,000 people. I was like, "SAY WHAT!!!" Now Arapahoe is a small town of 1,500 people. They don't even know what small town is! haha We are staying in a wonderful small church. The members are so loving and giving. Tomorrow is a 70 mile ride! Bring it on!!
Day 19 was dedicated to a lovely couple. Irlee and Rosemary Stagemeyer are two very loving people that I got the opportunity to get close to the past few years. Rosemary was so loving and giving. I will not forget singing "What A Wonderful World" for their 50th Anniversary party. They both battled cancer and unfortunately Rosemary lost her battle.
I also dedicated day 21 ride to the Alvarado Family. There are relatives to my Grandma Julia. She means a lot to me and I wanted to honor them in their fight against cancer.
